AFSCME members attending our union’s 45th International Convention in Philadelphia will have the opportunity help strengthen our country’s democracy.

At the Voting Rights Plaza in the Exhibit Hall, attendees can register to vote in this year’s elections or check their voter registration. They can take an action to commit to vote and sign up to become poll workers.

AFSCME members know how important it is to vote and we are ready to do everything in our power to protect our democracy.

As Lorna Davison, a member of AFSCME Local 1659 (Council 25) in Michigan, said in a video played at the Convention, “We know that if we want our voices to be heard, if we want our rights to be protected, we must vote in every election.”

Protecting our democracy begins with voter registration. At the Action Center, in the Exhibit Hall, attendees can also commit to vote and to bring three friends or family members to the polls with them. They can exercise their voting rights by making a plan to vote and reminding their friends and family to do the same.

Activities around voting rights also included a panel discussion on Tuesday on the most pressing voting rights issues facing our democracy and what pro-democracy organizations are doing to address them. The panel featured guests from Law Forward, We the People Michigan and the Texas Organizing Project, and was moderated by AFSCME Florida member Tallulah Thomas.
