Stand with UNITE HERE housekeepers

By AFSCME Staff ,

UNITE HERE Housekeepers deserve secure work and you deserve to have your convention hotel room cleaned every day, so demand both.

Hotel rooms used to be cleaned daily without you having to ask for it. But not anymore. Some chains like Hilton and Marriott are cutting back on this essential service – and putting numerous union housekeeping staff on the unemployment line.

Ending automatic daily cleaning won’t just endanger the safety of guests during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It will also endanger the jobs of the people who work hard to ensure that you return to clean, safe, healthy and comfortable rooms every day.

According to UNITE HERE!: “Fewer rooms to clean means fewer jobs for housekeepers. UNITE HERE estimates that ending daily housekeeping would eliminate up to 39% of all U.S. hotel housekeeping jobs and cost housekeepers – overwhelmingly women of color – $4.8 billion in annual lost wages. It also makes a housekeeper’s job even more painful, because rooms are much dirtier after days without cleaning.”

But you can easily prevent this from happening. All you have to do is make one simple demand when you check into your hotel room for the AFSCME 45th International Convention.  Just say, “Please clean my room every day.”
