Christina McAnea is the general secretary of UNISON, the UK's largest trade union representing 1.3 million public service workers.
McAnea was elected general secretary in January 2021. She won a member-wide election after serving four years as the assistant general secretary responsible for national bargaining across all the sectors UNISON organizes. She has also headed up both UNISON's health and education service groups. She has worked for UNISON since it was founded in 1993 and, before that, at the National Association of Local Government Officers. Prior to becoming a union official, she worked for Glasgow City Council, her home city in Scotland, for the health service and for the civil service.
In 2023, the New Statesman magazine named McAnea as the ninth most influential person on the British political left in its annual Left Power List.
