Do you handle your local union’s finances? Then the three financial workshops being offered at the 46th AFSCME International Convention are for you.

Two workshops are offered only on Sunday, Aug. 11 — “Safeguarding Union Assets” and “Budgeting During Challenging Times.” A third workshop titled, “AFSCME Financial Standards Code — Changes in an Evolving World” is being offered on Monday, Aug. 12. Check the convention app or the convention website for the times and room numbers.

“Safeguarding Union Assets” will teach you how to best protect your union’s finances from fraud. You will learn how some of these fraudulent schemes occur, and ways to detect and prevent them before they happen. Additionally, this session will also discuss cybercrimes and how to protect your union from them.

“Budgeting During Challenging Times” will show you how to better project and predict expenses, how to connect budgeting to your union’s strategic plan, and how to use your union’s budget to measure success or identify areas where greater attention is necessary.

“AFSCME Financial Standards Code — Changes in an Evolving World” focuses on updates to our union’s go-to document for financial oversight. The world has moved into the electronic age as the COVID-19 pandemic reminded us. To keep pace, AFSCME made extensive updates to the code over the past year. This workshop will provide an overview of these changes and how they may affect your union.
