Getting Around Los Angeles
Los Angeles is home to one of the country’s best public transportation networks, including subways, light-rail, buses and shuttles to nearly every corner of the Greater Los Angeles area. Most AFSCME members will arrive at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is about 18 miles – a 25-minute, non-rush hour drive – to downtown Los Angeles, where the AFSCME Convention hotels are located, as well as the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC). Members can also get downtown using the FlyAway bus or the Metro Rail subway.
Getting To, From and Around LAX
Taxis and Ride Shares
LAX-it (pronounced LA Exit) is the new way that guests arriving at LAX will connect to their Taxi, Lyft and Opoli rides when leaving the airport. You can walk to LAX-it to connect with your ride or take a free shuttle. Terminals 1 and 7 are closest and are a 3-to 8-minute walk; the farthest terminals, T4 and T5 are about a 19-minute walk. The LAX-it area is located right next to Terminal 1. Free shuttles with Wi-Fi arrive at the LAX-it stops on the first level outside of baggage claim.
Passengers who would like to take the free LAX-it shuttle bus should wait at the GREEN LAX-it sign on the Lower/Arrivals Level in front of each terminal.
Follow these easy steps to get to the LAX-it lot:
-When you exit the terminal look for the green shuttle bus that says LAX-it on the side.
-If you need assistance, you may ask the shuttle bus driver for help. For people with disabilities, they may help with luggage or assist the passenger in getting on or off the shuttle.
-If you need assistance at LAX-it, please let your driver know when you board the bus, so they can call ahead.
-For more information about the LAX-it lot adjacent to Terminal One, please click here.

Passengers leaving LAX may board buses on the Lower/Arrivals Level in front of each terminal at the columns with the blue FlyAway signs. Each bus is marked with its service location. One-way fares are $9.75 each. Using the FlyAway app on your smartphone is the fastest way to purchase a ticket! No account required. Activate your ticket directly from the app and scan it on the bus validator. You can also buy your tickets online. Create an account and purchase a ticket that you can conveniently print at home and then scan on the bus validator. Metro Rail System (subway)
The Metro Rail subway system is a convenient way to get from LAX to downtown Los Angeles. Metro stops are within blocks of AFSCME convention hotels, and the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) is located across the street from the Pico Station on the Blue Line.
The Metro Trip Planner is a great tool to use when planning your way around Los Angeles. The tool generates detailed instructions on how to get to and from your destination. You can also download the Go Metro Los Angeles mobile app to help you get around the city while you're on the go.
All transit rates start at a base fare of $1.75. In addition to a single-ride fare, options include the Metro Day Pass ($7) and the 7-Day Pass ($25). On the Metro Rail and the Metro Orange Line, single-ride fares, passes and stored value must be loaded on a Metro TAP card. TAP is a durable plastic card that you can use again and again. Buy and add value to a reusable TAP card from TAP vending machines located at Metro Rail or Metro Orange Line stations. The TAP card allows you to add money and/or choose from a daily, weekly or monthly pass to add to your card. Buying a pass is often less expensive than the base fare price per ride.
For more information on fares, passes and TAP, visit: www.metro.net/riding/fares.
Rail Stations & Convention Hotels
Several of the convention hotels are located within a few blocks of these Metro Rail stations.
Metro Bus System
Local, Rapid, Express and BRT (bus rapid transit) services are available throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. With nearly 200 different lines, buses travel all over the region to every major destination including state parks, area attractions and shopping districts. Many Metro Bus lines provide connections to Metro Rail stations.
Metro Local (painted orange) makes frequent stops along major streets throughout the city.
Metro Rapid (painted red) offers fewer stops and expedited travel times on the city’s major streets, with the use of special transponders that cause traffic signals to favor the bus.
Metro Express (painted blue) offers reduced stop service along the city’s freeway systems.
The Metro Silver Line (bus rapid transit) connects the South Bay and the San Gabriel Valley to Downtown L.A.
The Metro Orange Line (bus rapid transit) runs from North Hollywood to Warner Center in Woodland Hills.
For detailed schedules, interactive maps, multi-language pocket guides and more info, visit the Metro website www.metro.net.
