Sue Conard is a retired public health nurse and a member of AFSCME Wisconsin Retiree Chapter 32. When she fights for Social Security, she fights for her future and for future generations as well.

Conard lost her father when she was 3 years old, and Social Security benefits kept her family afloat and allowed her to stay in school.

Years later, when her husband passed away unexpectedly, Social Security helped her make mortgage payments, buy groceries and keep her health insurance.

There are always multiple proposals in Washington to curtail benefits, raise the retirement age or find other ways to break the promise that was made to workers.

“These attacks on Social Security are attacks on real people,” Conard said. “We earned these benefits through a lifetime of work, and it is something that allows all of us to age with dignity.”

Through her union, Conard will stay in the fight.

“We have to fight to keep that for the generations that are coming up behind us,” she said.
