The employees of the Torrington Police Department in Connecticut wanted to be part of a strong union that would communicate quickly with its members and provide sound guidance in any situation.

That’s why they left their previous union and voted unanimously to once again form a union, Local 4421, through AFSCME Council 4.

“Being able to go to AFSCME and call them any time of day, and somebody is going to respond and it will be an incredibly appropriate response, it’s a huge, huge asset for us and something we really appreciate,” said Police Officer Wesley Clifford.

Law enforcement can be dangerous, especially when dealing with people who are in crisis, such as mental health patients, those dependent on narcotics and perpetrators of domestic violence. Clifford said he and his fellow officers simply want to be safe at work and do a good job of providing public safety in their community.

“Knowing we have AFSCME as a resource to make sure we are doing the right thing is a huge weight off of my shoulders,” Clifford said.
